Not The Road That I Thought I Would Be On

I have always loved creating, I was truly fortunate to have an art teacher at my senior school, who was incredibly encouraging and inspiring in countless ways. He suggested that I should apply to The Glasgow School of Art, which held fascinating courses specifically designed for enthusiastic school pupils at weekends. Never really thinking I would actually be successful, I took my huge black leather portfolio filled with my artwork into the big smoke, brimming with eager anticipation and excitement. When I arrived, I discovered a long line of children just like me, queuing twice around the block at which point my bubbling anticipation transformed into a wave of doubt and uncertainty. Anyway, a few weeks later, to my surprise, I received an acceptance letter, and it was truly everything I had dreamt of and more. I travelled on my own on the train from Hairmyres to Glasgow every Saturday, and during those journeys, I felt like the coolest person in the world, as if I was embarking on a wonderful adventure filled with endless artistic possibilities.

I completed an HND in Business & Printing, which gave me a solid foundation; from which to start my career as a graphic designer for a well-known print company. My dad had a thriving business in the automotive aftermarket, but he wanted to take the company in a different direction from his business partner, which ultimately led them to part ways. Recognising the opportunity to help my dad get things going in this new venture, I made the decision to leave the printers and work for him. Thirty years later, the family sold the business in 2019, and I found myself yearning to embrace my artistic passion once again.

My work is a bit eclectic, and that’s primarily because I absolutely love seeing a fleeting moment in time and feeling an irresistible need to create it in whatever medium I think best suits the essence of that experience. I truly appreciate that you have taken the time to explore my art and I hope you enjoy the connect with the pieces I create. Your support means the world to me!
